Mark Rippetoe's book taught me more about a squat in 15 minutes than I've tried hours to learn by watching videos and reading websites online.

Starting Strength only goes over 5 basic exercises -- Squat, Bench, Deadlift, Press, and Power Clean. He writes for two people -- the trainee and the trainer, but giving both perspectives allow the reader to fully understand the mechanisms behind each movement.

At first I balked at the $25 cost of this book. But thanks to it's usefulness I wouldn't even sell it to someone for $100.

I had been working out on machines for three months making no real progress. Trying to find out why I was making no progress led me to this book. It was highly recommended on a few forums I read. I took a week off from going to the gym and read the book. It was a revelation.

"Starting Strength" by Rippetoe and Kilgore ranks as perhaps the best and most useful of fitness books out there. You won't find any stilly stuff about bicep curls, tricep pushdowns nor any other body part exercise.
